Music Director: Mackenzie Broome of WVFSMusic

The Planetary Group took some time to get to know Mackenzie Broome of WVFS in Tallahassee, FL!

Planetary Group: Tell us about how you got involved at WVFS and how that experience has impacted you?

MB: I grew up in Tallahassee and my parents would tune in to 89.7FM pretty regularly, so I always knew about WVFS. It wasn’t until later in high school that I really started paying attention to how different it was compared to other stations—it introduced me to so much music, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that.

PG: Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

MB: I feel like I will never have a fixed answer for this question, but in general I really enjoy Pornography by The Cure and Evol by Sonic Youth. However, more recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Blonde Redhead’s Penny Sparkle and The Third Eye Foundation’s I Poo Poo On Your Juju (lol).

PG: Is there a kind of music or particular artist you’d NEVER play on your show?

MB: I would never play 100gecs.

PG: How did you get your start in the music industry?

MB: WVFS has been my first and only introduction to the music industry. I started working here during my freshman year of college through the News and PR departments before eventually becoming a DJ.

PG: If you had the power to instantly change one thing going on in the music industry at the moment, what would it be?

MB: I think artists need to ban their managers from trying to get their music popular on TikTok or social media in general. They all seem to be after a “viral moment” in their music and I think it just kills the whole art of it all.

PG: What event or person in your life would you say has shaped you the most as a person? A music curator?

MB: My parents have definitely influenced my interest in music. As a kid, we had 5-disc CD changer in our living room and I was allowed to pick out a CD to load it with alongside my parents’ choices. I suppose this was my first foray into “curating” music. Beyond that, my dad has always liked to burn CDs for holidays, special events, or for fun and it tended to be something I gawked at in my younger years.

PG: Has working in college radio made you want to further pursue a career in the music industry?

MB: College radio has definitely opened my eyes to the many potential career paths in the music industry and has definitely made that path more of a viable pursuit for me.

PG: What in your life brings you the most joy?

MB: I really like spending time with my dog and exploring nature trails.

PG: Do you have any favorite TV shows, movies, or books you’re enjoying you’d currently recommend?

MB: For movies, I really like House by Nobuhiko Obayashi–I just think it’s really funky. For books, I’m a ride or die for Virginia Woolf.

PG: And finally, are there any concerts you are looking forward to happening in the near future?

MB: I saw Xiu Xiu back in October and just saw Slowdive a couple weeks ago, so I’d say my concert-going is entering a dry spell for the time being. However, both of those shows were excellent! I think Xiu Xiu is such a weird freaky band in a very cool way (Jamie Stewart started doing handstands on stage and then played a cowbell with a vibrator).
