Music Director: Nina Bertuca of Radio DePaul

The Planetary Group took some time to get to know Nina Bertuca of Radio DePaul in Chicago, IL!

Planetary Group: Tell us about how you got involved at Radio DePaul and how that experience has impacted you?

Nina:I transferred to DePaul as a sophomore, and Radio DePaul was the #1 student organization I wanted to get involved with. Not only has Radio DePaul given a network of friends and music lovers at DePaul, it’s also connected me with the greater college radio community in Chicago and the rest of the country.

PG: Do you have a favorite artist or album you never get tired of listening to?

Nina: I feel like I always come back to Slaughter Beach, Dog. I just saw them for the 5th time over the weekend, and can always cycle through their albums/ Jake’s earlier projects (Modern Baseball). I like to say they’re my forever favorite band, since I was 13 or so.

PG: How did you get your start in the music industry?

Nina: I was a School of Rock kid throughout high school, which gave me a lot of exposure to venues in the city and the day-to-day of a gigging musician. That’s how I got bit by the live music bug. In February 2023, I was lucky enough to be hired onto the team of staff that would open the indoor space at the Salt Shed, and I’ve been there ever since, and have had some really awesome opportunities to work shows, including Pitchfork 2023 and 2024. I’ve also interned at two booking agencies and with Terrorbird for radio promotion. My biggest advice to anyone looking to work in the music industry is to get to know your local music scene, and put yourself out there!

PG: Do you have any favorite TV shows, movies, or books you’re enjoying you’d currently recommend?

Nina: I’m currently reading Either/Or by Elif Bautman, which I’d recommend to any college student who enjoys dry humor and reflecting on your own personal growth during college.

PG: And finally, are there any concerts you are looking forward to happening in the near future?

Nina: Julien Baker and Ratboys at Thalia Hall tomorrow, and Clairo at Salt Shed in a few weeks! My weekly radio show at Radio DePaul also highlights shows happening in the Chicago in the upcoming week– you can listen at 11am on Sundays, or follow on Instagram @localshowlineup

Thank to Nina for speaking with us!
